WOODINGS INDUSTRIAL REPLACES MOVABLE THROAT ARMOR FOR WEIRTON’S NO.1 BLAST FURNACE

MARS, Pa. (Feb 9, 2004)

Woodings Industrial Corporation, a worldwide leader in the manufacture of metals industry equipment, recently provided the engineering and manufacturing for the replacement of the movable throat armor for Weirton’s No. 1 blast furnace.

Employing its wear resistant overlay engineering and manufacturing expertise, Woodings helped to improve the wear life of the Aker Kvaerner throat armor assembly by using Grabe overlay plates. Woodings is the exclusive supplier of the Grabe chromium carbide weld overlay components in North America. Grabe utilizes technology developed with the world leaders in overlay welding materials. This technology results in better weld penetration, which translates into better overlay reliability and fewer pass transitions, which is where weld overlay wear is most prominent.

“By working with Aker Kvaerner to make changes to the fabrication design and fabricating the throat armor with the Grabe overlay plates we are trying to improve its performance and extend its life,” said Al Colucci, General Manager of Engineering for Woodings. “The Grabe overlay plates are manufactured with superior weld processes that make it better than any type plate on the market.”
