WOODINGS PROBE REPAIR GIVES INDIANA STEEL PRODUCER MORE ACCURACY
(February 10, 2006)—As is often the case, simple changes have resulted in a significant improvement for a major steelmaker. As part of an improvement project on its blast furnace, the steelmaker called on Woodings Industrial to make some changes to an 10 ½” diameter in-burden probe.
The probe needed repaired and lengthened in order to reach the center of the furnace. Woodings lengthened the hydraulically driven probe to 37' with a cylinder stroke length of 27'. The lengthening allows the probe to be positioned in the critical center part of the furnace. As a result, temperature and gas readings are more accurate.
Woodings also tested the weld integrity of the probe to ensure proper operation and optimal product life.
