ARCELORMITTAL TO UPGRADE WITH WOODINGS AUTOMATED HYDRAULIC DRILL

(Mars, PA) –ArcelorMittal has placed an order with Woodings Industrial Corporation for a new hydraulic drill to be installed at the steelmaker’s Indiana Harbor East No. 7 Blast Furnace.

The new drill, which features advanced automated hydraulic drilling technology with water mist, will replace an existing pneumatic drill on the Blast Furnace’s No.1 taphole.

The drill, designed and built by Woodings, is slated to be commissioned during the 2nd quarter of 2010. Woodings supplied a new front end assembly and feedshell, complete with hydraulic drifter and hydraulic feed motor. To reduce project costs, Woodings designed the system to utilize the existing boom arm assembly.

The Woodings hydraulic drill will provide the following benefits to the blast furnace operation:

  • reduced drilling times
  • more reliable casting practice
  • higher feed-motor power and rotational torque
  • high frequency impact to improve the drilling process and reduce potential for taphole refractory damage The drill also features fully automated controls for push-button control and spot-on predictability and repeatability.
